Amanda H. Smith
My name is Amanda H. Smith, and I have been teaching math for 11 years. I've taught 15 different high school courses in 2 states.
I now teach at Canyon Crest Academy, a public school-of-choice in the San Dieguito Union High School District in San Diego, California. I have worked with students in grades 9-12 in integrated College Prep & Honors courses, as well as AP Calculus AB. CCA consistently ranks as one of the best public high schools in the state of California.
During the year of distance & hybrid learning, which was also my first year teaching in California, I taught at Guajome Park Academy, a charter school in Vista, CA. At Guajome, I taught IB math courses (both SL and HL) while also serving as a High School Math Intervention Specialist. In my role as an intervention specialist, I pushed in as a co-teacher to help students in Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 classes who were struggling with the challenges of distance & hybrid learning.
Before moving to California in 2020, I taught for eight years at West Forsyth High School in Cumming, Georgia. While there, I gained six years of experience teaching AP Calculus AB and two years of experience teaching AP Calculus BC. I also taught various other mathematics courses during my time there, including Support classes up to Accelerated Honors, and from 9th grade up through 12th. During my last two years at West Forsyth, I was working towards earning my second graduate degree from Kennesaw State, which I completed in May 2020.
I am credentialed to teach mathematics in both California and Georgia. I am also credentialed to teach psychology in California and have the English Learner Authorization (ELA1). Please see my resume for details!
I am passionate about making mathematics accessible, relatable, and fun for my students. I strive to inspire curiosity and questioning in my students, and my pedagogy centers on empathy and respect for all learners.
